Montpellier - A model of coherency between urban develop. and transp. policy

Ziele/Ideen:
The goal is to limit the car traffic in the city, to develop public transport, and to promote alternative transports. The project aim is to transform the historical city centre into a pedestrian-only area and to promote friendly means of transport such as cycling and trams with cheaper parking tickets.

Kurzbeschreibung:
All important facilities and densely populated areas are located next to existing or future tram lines. The mobility policy is transforming the whole historical city centre into a pedestrian reserved area due to a large belt of payable parking spaces around the city centre. Parking is cheaper at the final stations than in the city. The return-ticket for the tram is included in the prices for the parking spot at the parking lots, fitting 3,200 cars, which are located nearby the tram stations. A bus network is built around the tram lines and the use of bicycles is promoted. Residents can use any of the 50 bicycle rental stations, storing over 1.800 bikes. An owner of an annual tram pass can rent the bikes for free. The first tram line opened its service in 2000, the second opened in 2006. Over 65 million people us both lines per year, and the third line will open in 2012. At this stage, the combined track length will be 58 kilometres long.

Resultate:
Within ten years, the number of passenger has doubled and the financial support has tripled, and 90 per cent of passengers are happy with the tramlines.Einreicher:
