Bike the Track/ Track the Bike

Einreichende Institution: DTV Consultants
Jahr: 2013

Ziele/Ideen:
Leisure travel accounts for a larger share of trips than, for example, commuter journeys. Nevertheless, it has not yet received much attention in present urban climate policies.
Cycling is considered the most suitable mode of transport for short distance trips (from 2 to 5 km). Especially in the urban areas these are often leisure trips. Cycle promotion for leisure travel has a lot of potential for achieving emission reductions.

Kurzbeschreibung:
The “Bike the track/ track the bike” (B-Track-B) concept is based on a combination of successful pilots executed in Denmark (city of Fredericia, cycle registration systems), and the Netherlands (the “Ride2Scool” project in Rotterdam). Combining the lessons learned of those local experiments into a powerful “Bike the Track/ track the bike” concept will allow to foster cycling during leisure travel.

The B-Track-B concept combines cycling, game elements and new but available social media, RIFD and GPS tracking technology to boost present bicycle use to, from and during leisure activities.

The main target groups of the B-Track-B concept are families with children aged 9-15 that live in the urban area. There are more than 700 families that participate directly within the B-Track-B campaign through targeted actions from the cities that already joined (Fredericia Denmark, Helmond Netherlands, Venice Italy, Munster Germany, Algarve Portugal, Espoo Finland, Ljubljana Solvenie).

Resultate:
B-Track-B aims to achieve among other the following objectives:

1. To encourage a modal shift increase of 10% of family leisure travel to the less energy intensive bicycle through a dedicated “bike the track” marketing concept and accompanying events.
2. To transfer, apply and promote widely, the B-Track-B well proven best practices, campaign tools adaptable to the different European local setting, language and cycle culture allowing other cities to join in.
3. The present participating cities already signed up for 3 668 (toe/year) primary energy savings ) and 10 480 t CO2e/year reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at the end of the 2015.
