Orcelle Horizon

Orcelle Horizon
GTL-035 2023 Wallenius Wilhelmsen

Ziele/Ideen

Shipping is essential for global trade, but a significant contributer to the emissions causing climate change. Wallenius Wilhelmsen, project coordinator and vessel owner, has an extensive fleet of RoRo (Roll-on, Roll-off) vessels. The multi-wing demonstrator vessel, Orcelle Wind, will be a manifestation of their purpose: Sustainable logistics for a world in motion. The RoRo ship will use wind as the main form of propulsion, reducing emissions up to as much as 90 percent. Over 200 meters long, it will have a capacity of carrying 7000 cars along with breakbulk and rolling equipment. Cargo owner Volvo is one of the project partners, onboard to represent the customer perspective and evaluate the possibilities for decarbonizing logistic scenarios with Orcelle Wind in their supply chains.

Kurzbeschreibung

Developing the worlds first wind powered RoRo vessel:
The eleven partners in the EU-funded Orcelle Horizon project are taking a 360-degree perspective on wind as main propulsion. The technology enables efficiency gains of more than 50 percent as an average saving for a full year of operations, and up to 90 percent under ideal sailing conditions. The project will support the development of two physical demonstrator vessels. First up is an Oceanbird Wing retrofit on one existing vessel, followed by a multi-wing newbuilt: The Orcelle Wind. Both RoRo vessels are owned by Wallenius Wilhelmsen and set to transport cars and other cargo, with significant emission reductions, across the world.

Resultate

The project had its official start in 2023, with a duration of five years. The one-wing retrofit targets efficiency gains of about 10 percent. For the multi-wing newbuilt demonstrator, Orcelle Wind, the average efficiency gains for a full year of operations will be arround 50 to 60 percent, and up to 90 percent under ideal sailing conditions.
By demonstrating the viability of solutions for wind as main propulsion in this scale, the project aims to enable a large scale whift towards wind in the entire shipping industry. As shipping needs to decarbonize, reducing the amount of fossil fuels burnt is cruical for both environmnetal benefits and social values.
